Happy Birthday to the San Francisco Accordion Club
April Musical Meeting: It Just Keeps Getting Better!
In addition to a fabulous program, we had the pleasure of a visit
from Dr. Anthony Bruno, father of the late Tom Bruno whom so many of us
knew and loved.
Today's meeting marks the 20th anniversary of our club in its present
incarnation. Three of the five founders were present (see photo).
Our own young Lorenzo Lucchesi performed pre-meeting "warm-up" music.
Mary Tokarski, champion performer, teacher, winner of countless
awards and honors in the US and all over the world, mesmerized our audience
with her technique, dexterity, and the wide variety of music she played.
She was truly amazing!
In the second half, it was Joe Smiell's Big Band that kept the
audience clapping, "schunkeling"* and singing with a very wide variety of
mostly folk tunes from many countries (Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain--you
name it!), including trumpets in all four corners of the room. Wow!
*"Schunkel" refers to people locking arms and swaying back & forth to
the music, as in the Bavarian Oktoberfest.
